Abstract

This work presents a study of a novel printed monopole antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. Printed on a dielectric substrate FR4 and fed by a 50 microstrip line, a planar rectangular monopole has been demonstrated to provide an ultra-wide 10 dB return loss bandwidth with satisfactory radiation properties. A dollar-shaped slot cut in the radiating patch and two square slots on the two bottom corners of the radiating element increase the impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna up to 138%. The parameters which affect the performance of the antenna in terms of its frequency domain characteristics are investigated. The proposed antenna is optimized by ANSOFT High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). Details of the proposed antenna design and a simulated result are described and discussed. The result of the simulated and measured S11, gain and radiation pattern shows good performance for UWB applications.
