Abstract

The study investigated the prevalence of UTIs and antibiogram of bacterial isolates from female
patients in two academic and a health institutions in Bori metropolis in Khana LGA. Standard
microbiological protocols were followed to validate the aetiologic agents and possible antibiotic
chemotherapy. Results indicate that of the six hundred (600) female patients screened; 360 (60%)
showed significant bacteriuria and 240 (40%) were negative. The highest percentage prevalence of
90 (25%) occurred among female adults of age group 31-35 years followed by 80 (22.2%) female
adults of age group 36-40 and 30 (8.3%) young females of age group 16-20 years as the least. Those
among these elevated UTI prevalence are women in reproductive age. A total of six (6) bacterial
species consisting of Escherichia coli, Proteus sp., Klebsiella sp., Staphylococcus aureus,
Staphylococcus sp (coagulase negative) and Pseudomonas species were identified with E. coli being
the most predominant. Antibiotic susceptibility test indicated that all the test bacterial species were
strongly sensitive to Ciprofloxacin, Augmentin and Sparfloxacin. Gram positive bacteria were sensitive
to Tarivid and Peflacin but the Gram negative bacteria were resistant to these drugs (Tarivid and
Peflacin). Staphylococcus species showed strong resistance to Erythromycin but all the test Gram
negative bacteria were sensitive to it with the exception of Pseudomonas species. Therefore, it is
imperative to identify specific uropathogens followed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing for effect
management of UTI patients.
